Your Success Will Be Unique

A group of masterminds from Wharton came to Hollywood to study the business model, figuring they could analyze and demystify it. They applied every 'rule' of business to what they witnessed in agents' offices, pitch meetings, casting sessions, producer lunches, and studio powwows only to leave Hollywood scratching their collective business head. There is no science to the entertainment industry. That is why it's so important to remember that your path is unique. Reading about others' experiences is of value, commiserating with other actors is also of value, but none of it provides a recipe for your success

Principal vs. Principle

When you're talking about your role in a project or the onset of filming your project, you mean "principal," as that's the only option that can *be* an adjective, and that's what you're listing on a resumé in the billing column: the type of role (principal, supporting, featured; recurring, guest-star, co-star); or in your blurb about starting the main part of your work

Putting Your Email on Your Website

Putting your email on your acting site can lead to lots of spam. This email encoder from Automatic Labs may keep robots from harvesting your email address and spamming you, while allowing any producers/directors/casting directors to email you. I'm trying it on my site (from Bonnie Gillespie's 'The Actors Voice' column).

Stats on Submissions

Casting director Bonnie Gillespie shares some numbers from a recent casting (she points out ...this is all Actor Mind Taffy, so don't overthink any of this. Just enjoy and observe.):
Of the actors we saw at prereads, 75% use staples to attach their headshots and resumés, 12% do NOT attach them, 6% print the resumés onto the backs of the headshots, 3% glue them on, and another 2% brought no resumé at all (just a photo). Only eight actors didn't bring a headshot at all! Word's getting out!
About 3% of actors don't have contact information on their headshots and resumés. And 72% of actors trim their resumés to the size of their headshots. Only 13% of actors have horizontal headshots (another 8% do that cool horizontal on the vertical style I love so much). Color headshots came in at a whopping 92%.

On Flexibility

Why, when I can just be flexible, would I need to make sure the world knows I've been somehow inconvenienced?
There is NOTHING inconvenient about my life. I love every bit of it. And if someone says, "Oh, this is Bonnie, our casting agent," I don't feel the need to say, "It's casting director." And if someone calls to say, "I'm not going to make it to dinner tonight. I'm so sorry," I say, "Okay. Cool. I'll miss you," and head out for a meal with someone else... such a happy surprise!
I've got no time to go out of my way to try and make people feel bad. And I worry about people who DO. No... wait... I don't worry about them. I avoid them. I've got no room in my life for that kind of drama. Life's too damn short.
