Stage Development for TV
While nets check viral videos and online pilots for possible network talent, some keep tabs on a more old-fashioned medium - the live stage.
While Comedy Central's Motherload just announced a broad slate of online series, the net's newest highly-touted show started not online, but on stage. The Naked Trucker & T-Bones Show has been a popular Los Angeles attraction for several years, and since Comedy Central saw the projects' potential in a live setting, they decided to skip the traditional pilot process and keep the show's development in its natural habitat.
The live format also allowed for flexibility with length. This is a full-length pilot presentation, says Mann. From 40 minutes on stage, we edited a 25-minute taped presentation. That length doesn't work webisode-wise.
This process is not a first for the net. Faux talk show Crossballs was developed through a similar process, and even Mind of Mencia, the second most watched show on Comedy Central, was workshopped through a lengthy on-stage process that culminated in a do-or-die presentation at the Stage in front of a live audience(from Cynopsis).
