Even with the revolution in TV viewing, ratings still matter
The revolution will not only be televised: Television itself is undergoing a revolution.
Look at what's coming down the pike (some of which is already here): Pay-per-view CSI and NCIS episodes via cable. On-demand airings of Law & Order: SVU via satellite. Lost downloads on iTunes. Using your TiVo to put TV episodes on your iPod or gaming device. The Daily Show on your cell phone.
The fact is, most networks are only starting to figure out how to make money off low-rated but much-loved shows such as Arrested Development, which is considered a network failure because it pulls in "only" 4.3 million or so viewers per outing.(from Chicago Tribune).
