Gold or Picks and Pans

In the 1848-1855 California gold rush, many made fortunes. It isn't usually pointed out that many who made fortunes were not prospectors, but sold prospectors what they needed to try to find gold and get it out of the ground: the picks, pans, shovels, and more. Headshots, reels, classes and such are our picks and pans. You are not your headshot, your reel, your starmeter rating, etc. Those are the tools, you are the gold.

Using the other meaning of this title, many who critique, cannot do. Many who pick and pan, are stopping themselves from being gold; be careful and gentle when criticizing others' work (and certainly your own).

Amazon Studio Fine Print

Jesse Harris has some good comments about Amazon Studio:

If you submit a script or "test movie" as they are calling it, you give Amazon an exclusive 18-month option for your project without any pay. Meaning you can't pitch or sell your idea to anyone else during that 18-month period.

Many scripts may end up submitted as a last ditch effort; it may become the dumping ground for dead scripts. Thanks to Dana Brunetti for tweeting about Jesse's post.

Amazon Launched Their Movie Studio

It is now an hour and 26 minutes old.

Under a new first-look deal with Warner Bros., Amazon.com has launched Amazon Studios, a user-generated online development and production outfit built around monthly contests and community feedback. The end result, if all goes as planned, will be feature films derived from the best user submissions that Amazon Studios produces for theatrical release

Don't Help People Say No

...I know that many marketers [actors] work hard on behalf of the rejection committee. We sabotage our college applications or email pitches or websites [or auditions], predicting in advance that we're not going to make it, not good enough, not worthy. So we set out to save them the trouble of having to think hard about the no.
If someone wants to say no, let them. But no need to help them get to no before they get the chance. Let them do their job
